Homeless Prevention

Studies show that Los Angeles is the most unaffordable city in the United States and ranks in the top fifteen most expensive cities in the world. It comes as no surprise that we also have the second largest population of homeless people in the United States. In fact, one in twenty-seven Angelenos are homeless. The Tenants Law Firm prevents homelessness in Los Angeles by helping tenants fight evictions and maintain their affordable housing status. Our Homelessness Prevention project protects tenants and holds landlords accountable for their actions.

Who Qualifies?

The Tenants Law Firm helps tenants who have been served with eviction notices, Unlawful Detainers, and three-day notices. We also help individuals who fear that they may be at risk of an eviction based on statements or threats made by their landlords. For an example of what qualifies as a notice or potential threat of eviction, please call us at 310-432-3200.

Champion Project

The number of homeless veterans has increased 57% since 2016, and the Tenants Law Firm is one of the only options for veterans at risk of housing insecurity in Los Angeles County. We make sure that those who fought for our freedoms at home and abroad do not have to fight their landlords alone. The Champion Project helps with evictions, harassment, discrimination, code violations, and any other breach of housing rights. In order to prevent veteran homelessness, it’s important to target critical risk junctures in a tenant’s life like housing transitions. Making sure that landlords are held responsible for respecting a veteran’s housing rights prevents needless evictions and transiency.

Who Qualifies?

The Champion Project helps veterans, including active duty services members of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. We likewise help members of the Army and Air National Guard, the Delayed Entry Program, DoD Reservists, retirees, annuitants, firefighters, police officers, and EMT workers. Immediate family members of veterans or servicemembers also qualify for legal representation.

Splash!

Our newest program, Services Preventing Los Angeles Slum Housing, is aimed at holding landlords accountable for poor living conditions in the residential complexes that they manage. Many issues currently plague tenants in Los Angeles like rats, cockroaches, faulty windows, water leaks, poor electrical installation, dust from construction, excessive noise, and other things that may constitute a nuisance or threaten the habitability of a housing unit. SPLASH! is entirely dedicated to enforcing the housing standards outlined by the city of Los Angeles, the state of California, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. We make waves, so that tenants have the opportunity to enjoy their homes to the fullest extent protected by law.

Who Qualifies?

Tenants who are suffering in uninhabitable housing conditions are eligible for representation if they can show a demonstrated economic need for legal help. We look at the entire circumstances of an individual or family’s financial circumstances and make determinations on a case-by-case basis.
