Los Angeles Builds Tiny Home Villages to Ease the Homelessness Crisis

In February of 2021, Los Angeles opened its first tiny home village to offer interim housing and services for people who lack shelter. The one-acre plot in a North Hollywood neighborhood now holds 39 64-square-foot units. The village has its own security gate, and each unit has 4 windows, 2 beds, shelving, and an A/C unit. Each home is painted red, white, and blue to bring life and color into the village. There are also bright red picnic tables and a hygiene trailer with toilets and showers within the village’s fences.

This Chandler Street village was built and funded by the City of Los Angeles as an emergency response to the growing homelessness crisis. In 2020, tallies showed that there were 66,400 homeless people in Los Angeles County. As the city began to look for creative, new solutions to get the homeless off of the streets and into safer shelters, tiny homes served as an affordable option. Many other cities, including San Jose, Sacramento, Seattle, and Minneapolis have begun to create tiny home villages to ease the homeless crisis.

The Chandler Street village is operated by the nonprofit Hope of the Valley, which hopes to provide services that can create a path out of homelessness. Counselors at the village provide mental health treatment, legal aid, and job search services. Hope of the Valley is currently building two more tiny home images in North Hollywood.
